"I've been supporting new mums for 11 years. And in all that time, no one had ever explained why their tummy wasn't going back to normal."

Every week, the same woman sits down in my clinic.

She gave birth a few months ago. Sometimes a few years. Sometimes more than ten. She's done her physio. She's got back into exercise. She eats better than before her pregnancy.

And she always asks me the same question:

"Why won't my tummy go back to normal?"

What strikes me is that they feel guilty. As if they're not doing enough. As if it's their fault.

It isn't their fault. And after 11 years, I want to explain, once and for all, something that isn't explained nearly enough.

Woman looking at her tummy in the mirror

They all say the same thing

"I lost all the pregnancy weight. The scales say 9 stone. But my tummy tells a different story. Soft. Sagging. Still showing even on an empty stomach, even under my clothes."

— Molly, 32 · Gave birth 8 months ago

"Mornings are manageable. By the evening, I look 4 months pregnant. My husband says I'm exaggerating. But it's my body — I know it."

— Amelia, 36 · 2 children

"I stopped looking at myself in shop mirrors. I cancelled the pool trip with the kids this summer. I'm 34 and I'm hiding."

— Sophie, 34 · C-section 14 months ago

Mums who are doing everything right. Who are fighting for it. Eating better, moving more, never giving up.

And who still feel guilty for seeing no results.

Why nothing you've tried has worked

What I'm about to explain is something most women discover far too late. Sometimes months. Sometimes years after giving birth.

Woman doing abdominal exercises

Ab exercises strengthen the muscles — but they don't close the wall back up.

For nine months, your abdominal organs were displaced. Your uterus grew until it filled the entire abdominal cavity. It pushed your bowel upward, your colon to the sides. Everything shifted.

Your abdominal wall stretched. Your tummy muscles widened and lengthened.

After birth, the uterus shrinks back quickly. But your organs don't automatically return to position. The abdominal wall doesn't close itself back up.

That tummy you can't seem to shift — it's often not excess fat. It's a structure that's stayed open.

Here's why every solution fails

Exercise — Ab workouts strengthen the muscles. But they don't compress the wall inward. Crunches can even make a diastasis worse. Most women have no idea.

Dieting — You can't burn off a displaced structure with a calorie deficit. Your tummy isn't made of excess fat — it's a muscular space that hasn't closed back up.

Pelvic floor physio — Essential. But it works the pelvic floor. Not the closing of the abdominal wall. It's like repairing a house's foundations without touching the walls.

Standard shapewear — It compresses the front. Your tummy pushes out at the sides and back instead. The moment you take it off, everything drops again. Some even make things worse by shifting the pressure elsewhere.

Surgery — A tummy tuck costs between £5,000 and £10,000. A scar hip to hip. 8 to 10 days off work. 3 months of recovery unable to lift your child. And if you put on even 2-3kg, the skin can give way again. For many mums, it's simply not realistic or accessible.

"I saw a surgeon. £8,000. I drove home in silence. That evening I cried in the bathroom. Not because I wanted the surgery. Because I believed it was my only option."

Over 500 mums have already got their figure back

The sentence that changed everything in my practice

Three years ago, a physiotherapist colleague said something I've never forgotten:

"Shapewear compresses the front.
The body wraps all the way round."

That's the whole difference.

Take a moment to think about it.

Your tummy isn't a flat wall. It's a cylinder. It has a front, sides, a back. The displaced organs aren't just at the front — they're throughout the entire abdominal cavity.

Compressing only the front is like trying to seal a tube by pressing on one side. It will never work.

What's needed is circular pressure. 360 degrees. Front, sides, back. Continuous and even.

What Malaysian mums have known for 500 years

Malaysian Bengkung technique

The Bengkung: a length of fabric wound spirally around the tummy after childbirth.

In many cultures, women have known this for centuries.

In Malaysia, Morocco, Indonesia, Mexico — women bound their tummies after childbirth. Not for aesthetic reasons. For mechanical ones.

In Malaysia, this technique is called bengkung. A long strip of fabric wrapped several times around the tummy, worn in the weeks following birth.

360 degrees of continuous circular compression. Front, sides, back.

Studies on post-partum abdominal compression show a significant reduction in waist circumference and improved organ repositioning compared with women who wear no support at all.

The problem — and I say this honestly to my patients — is that the traditional bengkung is incompatible with modern life:

A strip several metres long

Twenty minutes to put on

Impossible to wrap alone

Slips within an hour

With a newborn, returning to work, short nights of sleep — no one can keep it up.

What I've been recommending to my patients for several months

Roseva 360° compression knickers

That's why, for several months now, I've been recommending Roseva to my patients.

A brand that took the bengkung principle and made it wearable.

Their cross-compression system reproduces the circular pressure of traditional wrapping in a pair of knickers you can put on alone in ten seconds, wear under any outfit, and that works all day long.

360° compression — front, sides and back

Slips on in 10 seconds like underwear

Invisible under any outfit

Suitable for breastfeeding and post-caesarean recovery

Available from S to 3XL

It isn't a belt that flattens from the outside while you're wearing it. It's compression that helps the abdominal wall do the work it couldn't do on its own.

What my patients notice — week by week

Day 1-3

An immediate feeling of support. The tummy is held, not crushed. Most women wear it all day without a second thought.

Week 1

The tummy starts to feel different to the touch. Less soft, more supported. Some put on a pair of jeans they hadn't touched in months.

Week 2-3

This is often when people around them notice. "What have you done? You look different." The tummy lifts, recentres, visibly smooths out.

Week 4-8

Lasting results on waist size. Not weight loss — a tummy that's found its place again. Dresses worn again. Photos they're happy to be in again.

Results vary from woman to woman. These aren't medical claims — they're the most common feedback from my patients.

What mums are saying

★★★★★

"I gave birth 6 months ago and my tummy just wasn't shifting, even with physio. After 3 weeks with Roseva, my husband said 'you look different'. I wear it every day, nobody knows."

Molly B., 32

★★★★★

"C-section 8 months ago. As soon as I could wear it, I felt the compression all the way round. Nothing like the belts I'd tried before. No pressure on my scar at all."

Amanda D., 35

★★★★★

"My last baby was 4 years ago. I thought it was too late for me. In 3 weeks, my waist came back. I fit into jeans I'd given up on."

Sophie T., 41

★★★★★

"I had a surgeon's quote sitting on my bedside table. £7,500. I ordered Roseva thinking 'if it doesn't work, I'll go back to it.' That was 2 months ago. The quote's in the bin."

Natalie R., 38
